Miss Rowley, together with her sister Lucile, 17, Kenneth Hitdlebaugh, 17, of Fenwick and Robert White, 18, driver of the auto, were enroute home on M-43 about six miles north of Ionia at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday after having attended the Saturday evening dance at Shiloh. At the same hour Mr. and Mrs. Edward Smith, 606 Harrison street, Ionia was on the way home from Greenville. Their car had run out of gasoline and after pushing it to the side of the road Mr. Smith had started to walk to a service station for gasoline leaving Mrs. Smith in the parked car. The auto in which the young people were riding approached at what is claimed to have been a reasonable rate of speed. Sleet was falling at the time and freezing on the windshield and this may have been the cause of the failure of Mr. White to see the parked car. He struck it from the rear hurling Miss Rowley through the windshield and fracturing her skull. She was picked up and taken to the general store at Shiloh. Dr. A.E. Holland, of Belding, was called but reached the girl’s side too late to be of assistance, death coming a very few minutes after his arrival.
