Rowley, 84, father of Mrs. Leo C. Lehman, died Monday forenoon at his cottage at Thornapple Lake. The body was brought to Portland and funeral services held from the Lehman home Wednesday afternoon, in charge of Rev. Birdsall. The local American Legion had charge of the services at the cemetery. The W. R. C. attended the funeral in a body. Mr. Rowley was a Civil war veteran. He was born in Hastings and enlisted January 2, 1864, in the 6th regiment, Michigan heavy field artillery, when 15 years of age, serving his country until the end of that conflict, when he was mustered out on September 5, 1865, at New Orleans. Returning to Michigan he continued to reside near Hastings and in 1871 was united in marriage to Miss Lenna Smith, of Stanton, who died 14 years ago. For a number of years following his marriage Mr. Rowley resided in the state of Washington, where he followed the vocation of machinist. Since the death of his wife he had resided at the Soldiers’ Home in Grand Rapids during the winters, spending the summers at his cottage on Thornapple lake and at the home of his daughter in Portland, acquiring a wide circle of friends and acquaintances in this vicinity through his numerous stays here.
