Another pioneer passed away early Sunday morning with the passing of Louis
Albert (Bert) Rowley at his home at 823 Pearl street.  The son of Colonel and
Margaret Green Rowley he was born in Kalamazoo, September 8, 1865 and came to
this vicinity with his parents at an early age, first living on a farm east of
the city and later near Cooks Corners.

He married Edith Rich Dec. 28, 1886 and they built the home on Pearl street
where he has always lived.  They celebrated their golden wedding in 1936.  Mrs.
Rowley passed away in 1944.

In his earlier life Mr. Rowley worked in the Richardson Silk mill and for local
merchants.  When the rural free delivery was established from the local post
office he was one of the first carriers, having a route south of the city and no
weather was severe enough for him to fail his delivery of mail if it was
possible to get through with his horse drawn vehicle, necessitating long hours
of work.  He was a friend to all, a kind neighbor and a man of sterling
character who lived for his family.  He retired in 1932 after 35 years as a
rural carrier.  He was a member of Belding Lodge No. 355, F. & A. M.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Leonard Fitzjohn, and two grandchildren. 
Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock at Fitzjohn Funeral home with Rev. H. S.
Ellis officiating, assisted by Rev. H. B. Johnson.  Interment was in River Ridge
cemetery.  Pall bearers were Luther Berry, Vern Brown, Bert Storey, Ferd Lewis,
Carroll Smith and Richard Rummler.
