Friday all day Fred Rummler was at work as usual in his father’s tailor shop and feeling uncommonly well and happy. That night about twelve o’clock he was taken with a chill which marks the first stages of the grippe and grew worse until he passed away at 6 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. The best of nursing and medical skill seemed to have no effect in staying the disease. After Fred’s return from Santiago he was sick and confined to the house for some time with the fever contracted in Cuba and it left him physically weak and in no condition to combat an attack of grippe. He has grown up from boyhood here, the family coming to the city ten years ago. When the call for volunteers was issued Fred was one of the first to respond and enlisted in Co. I, 34th Mich. Inft. and with his company was in the Santiago campaign. He returned to Montauk Point August 17th on his 28th birthday. His death causes much sadness among his young friends and is a severe blow to his parents who have the sympathy of the entire community. Funeral services will be held Friday at the Congregational church.
