Rupert, were largely attended Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the family residence, Lovell place. Rev. E.M. Jeffers, of the First Baptist church, officiated, but owing to the illness of Mr. Rupert, the services were limited to prayer and brief remarks by the pastor. The white casket in which the remains rested, was covered with an abundance of flowers, conspicuous among them being a handsome pillow of roses, carnations and lilies from the shopmen, and other beautiful designs from B. Haskell, of Grand Rapids who was able to attend, the schoolmates of deceased, and Baptist Sunday school. The remains were borne to the grave by Orry Waterbury, Elmer Davis, Frank Vizard, Walter Christie, Frank Frost and Charles Corcoran. The attendance from the shops was very large, 150 being in line as escort to the end of the pavement, where two lines were formed to allow the solemn cortege to pass on to the cemetery. Relatives here to attend the service were J.A. Skelton, of Buffalo, N.Y., brother-in-law of Mr. Rupert; Mrs. Emma Smith, Logansport, Ind.; P.H. Mertz, Burnetsville, Ind., brother of Mrs. Rupert; and W.M. Mertz, Detroit and B.F. Mertz, Owosso, cousins of deceased. Friends from away were W.H. Canan, general foreman of the D.G.R.& W. round house at Grand Rapids, F.W. Beats, chief clerk to superintendent motive power of same road, at Grand Rapids, and W.K. Christie, master mechanic C&W.M., Muskegon. Charles was a young man developing into a life of usefulness and activity, and the death is a great blow to his parents. He would have entered the D.G.R. & W. Machine shops in June as an apprentice. He was a favorite in school, and though the schools were not closed they were represented at the funeral by a committee from the class of deceased; Bertha Wurster, Allie Williams, Harley Preston and James Sheahan. The interment was in Highland Park cemetery. Additional Comments: Services: Tuesday, 11 April, 1899 Highland Park cemetery Sec. #4 b.
