Karl Jay Rusnell, age 83, of Ionia, Michigan, died on Sept. 11, 2014.  Karl was 
born on April 5, 1931, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of Harriet and Merle 
Rusnell.  He was raised and lived most of his life in Ionia along with his 
sisters and brothers, Artis (Coe), Arla (Lesky), Avis (White), Dale, Kenneth 
(Skip), Jay and Ben. 

He attended Ionia Public Schools.  In 1948, at the age of 17 ½ he joined the 
Navy.  While serving in the military he received his GED and took further 
service schooling for Hospital, Neuro-Physciatric and Clerical, receiving his 
certificate of special instruction in 1949.  He served state side and was 
honorably discharged in 1952 with the rank of Hospitalman 3rd Class.

Karl married Norma Dethloff in 1954 and the couple had four children: Marc 
(Terri) Rusnell of Lyons, Craig Rusnell (Iris) of Greenville, Kristie Gould of 
Ionia, and Brian Rusnell of Ionia.

Karl was self-employed in the concrete business for over 40 years. He enjoyed 
hunting, fishing and traveling throughout his life.

Following the death of his wife, Karl married Shirley Burns in 1988.  Together 
they loved to travel throughout the United States.  Karl was a member of the 
Moose 998 and Elks 274 and the American Legion of Saranac in Muskegon.

He was preceded in death by both of his wives, sisters Artis and Arla and 
brothers, Dale and Jay.  Karl is survived by his four children, 10 
grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial is planned for 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Easton United Methodist 
Church, 4970 Potters Road, Ionia.
