April 15, 1937 FORMER RESIDENT DIES AT E.LANSING Mrs. Almeda Russ after a Long Illness Leaves Home and Friends. Funeral at Home. Burial at Lakeside. Mrs.Almeda Russ, wife of Dr.O.C.Russ, passed away at her home in East Lansing, after a lingering illness from cancer. Mrs.Russ was born at Fowler, Mich. Upon her marriage to Dr.Russ they went to live in northern Michigan where he was a practicing physician. Forty-five years ago, Dr. and Mrs. Russ came to Lake Odessa when the village was in its infancy. The Doctor and his brother established the drug store now owned by F.W. Smelker. After disposing of the drug store, they moved to East Lansing where they purchased a home. Mrs.Russ was identified with the local Congregational church, being one of the original members. She was a fine soprano singer and gave much time to church work. She retained her membership there until her death. Mrs.Russ was an artistic trend as the many artistic features of her home indicated. They built the home now occupied by A.I. Nye on south Main street. Mr and Mrs Russ lost an adopted daughter by diphtheria and then adopted another, the now Mr. Frances Manning. The funeral was held at the East Lansing home, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. F.H. Humphrey, pastor of the local Congregational church, giving the sermon, and Wortley & Baine, undertakers, having charge of the funeral. Burial was at Lakeside Cemetery. Besides the husband and daughter there are many friends to mourn her passing. OBITUARY Almeda Lance, daughter of James and Sarah Lance, was born March 2, 1864, at Fowler, Mich., and departed this life April 12, 1937, at her home in East Lansing. She was the sixth child of a family of 15 children. She grew to womanhood in Fowler and on April 16, 1884, was united in marriage to Otto C.Russ. They made their home for a period of years at Remus and in the Upper Peninsula where Dr.Russ practiced medicine. They later moved to Lake Odessa where they lived until 10 years ago when they moved to East Lansing. Mrs.Russ was an ever ready friend and helper to all who needed her help. She has been a patient sufferer for many months but her God whom she learned to love early in life has been her constant source of help and comfort. She was a member of the Congregational Church at Lake Odessa and a former member of the Eastern Star chapter. She leaves to mourn her departure, a loving husband, an adopter daughter, Frances Manning, two grandchildren, four sisters, Mrs. Rachel Gaylord, Mrs.Alice Wilson, Mrs.George I. Baldwin, and Mrs Hattie Durst, two brothers James and Ernst Lance, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of loving friends. An adopted daughter, Marguerite, died at the age of six years. Her happy, helpful smile and kindly word will live long in the hearts of those with whom she came in contact.
