May 14, 1919 Mrs. Catharine Russell- Catharine Dorr was born at Manchester, Washtenaw County, Mich., on February 1, 1839. At the age of five years she emigrated with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Dorr, to what was then known as the Flat River country, this being previous to the formation of the present township of Orleans, Ionia County. They came with ox-team through the woods (no roads being laid out). And the journey requiring several days time. She was reared in that home where she had her full share of the hardships and experiences of a pioneer life. May 27, 1957, she was united in marriage to James Gilbert Russell and came to her late home where she has continuously resided for sixty-two years. She was the mother of six children, two of whom died in infancy. The others are Amos Russell who lives on the old farm, Albert Russell, of Ionia and Mrs. William Walker and Mrs. Delos Dickens, of Belding. There are also left to mourn their loss, eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one brother, Edwin Dorr, of Lake City and a host of friends. Mr. Russell preceded her to the great beyond on July 29, 1906. Mrs. Russell early in life was converted and became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, which membership she has retained over sixty years. Although past eighty years of age, she was exceptionally active, it being her greatest pleasure to visit her friends and do little acts of kindness for them. She was calling on relatives at Belding Wednesday, where the fatal accident occurred which resulted in death two hours later, never regaining consciousness. The funeral was held at the late home at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon. Burial was at Smyrna. Many beautiful flowers, silent tokens of respect from relatives and friends attested to the esteem in which she was held. Rev. P. Ray Norton, pastor of the M.E. church, officiated at the funeral and gave a most excellent discourse. Those from away who were called here to attend the funeral were, Mr. and Mrs. Foster Dorr, of Lake City, Mrs. L.C. Fales, Mrs. Alta Atwood, Mrs. Rose Armstrong, of Grand Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Fales, of Lowell, Albert Russell, Mrs. Kate Tuttle, Mrs. Mary Meade, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Downing, and Mr. and Mrs. Elliot Chadwick of Ionia. Card of Thanks We wish to extend our sincere thanks to the many friends who extended their assistance and sympathy in the loss of our dear mother, Catherine A. Russell. Also for the many beautiful offerings. Mr. and Mrs. Amos Russell Albert D. Russell Mr. and Mrs. William Walker Mr. and Mrs. Delos Dickens and family Additional Comments: Age 80 Mrs. C.
