She was born on April 18, 2923, in Belding the daughter of Leo and Gertrude (Engemann) Shindorf. Mrs. Rutz had just celebrated her 87th birthday with 40 family members in attendance. She graduated from Belding High School in 1941. She served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Shindorf family is believed to hold the c for Ionia County with five sons and one daughter serving their country in the armed forces. Brothers Earl, Hubert, Bernard and Richard served in the U.S.Army, brother Henry in the U.S.Navy, and sister Verda in the WAC. She was also a lifetime member of the Sheridan VFW Post and a member of the Belding American Legion Post and SS.Peter & Paul Catholic Church. She worked at Gibson Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Co. in both Greenville and Belding for 21 years before retiring in 1986. She married Charles "Bud" Rutz on feb.22, 1947 and he preceded her in death on Oct.1, 2006. Also preceding her in death were son-in-law, David and 10 siblings. Surviving are her sons, Jack (Charlett) Rutz of Saranac, Leo (Linda) Rutz of Saranac; daughters Reta (Dennis) Imhoff of Orleans and and Oliver of Ionia 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one step grandson; four step-great grandchildren; brother Barney (Hilda) Shindorf of Sheridan; sisters,Maggie Kahley of Tuscon, Arizona and Beverly Hessler of Belding; several special nieces and nephews. Graveside Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 6, 2010, at Easton Cemetery, Ionia with Rev. Thomas Boufford, presiding. Military Honors will be provided by the Sheridan VFW Post. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia Are Hospice in memory of Verda E."Betty" Rutz. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Homes,Ionia.
