Freight Conductor Ryder of the D.L. & N. R.R. Meets Death at Kiddville. A distressingly sad accident in which the life of a man in the full vigor of health and active in the discharge of his duties was suddenly ended. The accident occurred at Kiddville Friday morning. Conductor Ellsworth Ryder was in charge of his train which had arrived from Ionia, and while engaged in his work he fell between a couple of flat cars and was pushed along for some distance on the track, the wheels passing partly over him severing his left leg near the hip and crushing him so badly he died in a very few minutes after the accident occurred. His body was brought to this station and placed in charge of undertaker Wilson who prepared it for burial and later the remains were taken to Ionia where the unfortunate man resided having a wife but no children. Mr. Ryder had been in the employ of the Company for thirteen years and was a popular man. The funeral was held Sunday at Salem near Detroit where his parents lived and was very largely attended by his brother conductors, employees of the road, and friends. The deceased carried $1,000 in life and accident insurance. Special trains were run from Howard city and Detroit. O.F. Webster, G. G. Terwilliger, Will Peck and F.H. Totten attended the funeral from this city.
