Sage died at the National Soldiers’ Home in Tennessee, on Tuesday, May 20, according to his daughter, Mrs. Herbert Humphrey, who has been visiting friends here, but is now in Smyrna. Mr. Sage was a resident of Otisco for many years, from which town he enlisted in Co. B, 25th Michigan Infantry in the fall of 1862, entering the service as orderly sergeant and rising to rank of first lieutenant. He was wounded at the battle of Atlanta in 1864, and received his discharge in consequence. He was elected register of deeds in 1876, after serving as supervisor from Otisco several terms. At the expiration of his second term as register in 1881, he continued his residence in Ionia. He was in the grocery business for a time in company with Mr. Udell. Subsequently he was the secretary and manager of the Ionia Pottery Company, being succeeded in that position by C.B. Derthick. In 1904 he went to St. George, Ga., where he engaged in the hardware business, from which he retired three or four years ago. For the past two years or more he has been incapacitated for labor and has been in Soldiers’ Home, occasionally visiting old-time friends and relatives. His wife died several years ago. Two daughters survive: Mrs. Wm. H. Booth of Grand Rapids, and Hattie, wife of Herbert Humphrey of Alabaster, Mich. His age was about 75. His death must have been quite sudden as his daughter Hattie received a letter from him Saturday last, in which there was no intimation of his being otherwise than in usual health. The remains will be brought to Smyrna for the funeral and burial, George Purdy of that place, a nephew of the wife of deceased, going to Tennessee to give personal attention to the transportation.
