Sentinel-Standard - Monday, May 7, 1973

George A. Sallek, 54, of 1233 South State road died Sunday morning at Ferguson-
Droste hospital in Grand Rapids where he had been a patient six weeks. 

Born in Ionia June 18, 1918, he was the son of Michael and Katherine Stepinen 
Sallek.

He attended SS Peter and Paul academy after which he began work at Ypsilanti 
Reed Furniture company in 1936. In June 1942 he entered the army air force and 
served at Hickam Field, Hawaii, in World War II. He was awarded a medal for 
meritorious service.

He received a discharge from the service in October of 1945 and returned to 
work at Ypsilanti Reed Furniture Company and it's successors, working there 
until 1970, a total of 34 years.

He was married August 2, 1952, to Esther Funk at SS Peter and Paul church and 
she survives as do two sons, Christopher, a high school senior and David, a 
high school sophomore; mother, Mrs. Katherine Sallek of Ionia; two sisters, 
Helen Sallek of Ionia and Mary Sallek of Grand Rapids.

He was a former committee man for the Boy Scouts and had been cub master. He 
was a member of SS Peter and Paul church and past grand knight of Knights of 
Columbus and member of Girard Horrocks post, American Legion. 

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 am at SS Peter and Paul church. Fr. 
William Reitz of St. Mary Magdelan church in Grand Rapids will officiate and 
interment will be at Mt. Olivet cemetery. 

Parish rosary will be Tuesday at 8:15 pm at Leddick funeral home. Knights of 
Columbus rosary will be recited Tuesday at 8:45 pm at the funeral home.

Family will be at the funeral home Monday 7 to 9 pm and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 
7 to 9 pm.
