He was born May 15, 1927 in Green, N.Y. As Don would say, “If the Good Lord’s willing… and the creek don’t rise.” On Sept. 29, 2011, “The Good Lord was willing… and the creek rose.” Don was a veteran of World War II and retired from Michigan Department of Correction. He was a pridefull member of Ionia Moose, and Moose of the Year 2009-2010. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria (Broesamle) Sampson; daughter, Donna Doty; and grandson, Charlie Cochrane. He is survived by his brother, Raymond (Sally) Sampson of Green, N.Y., six children, Lael (Phil) Schmalzired of Levering, Jon Sutliff of Parma, JoAnn Bennett of Sun City, Ariz., Carol (Bill) Carroll of Waxhaw, N.C., Sara (Rick) Rose of Jackson, and Mary (Brentwood) Izzard of Ionia; grandchildren, Scott (Suzette) Schmalzire, Jayne (Mark ) Zink, Kelly (Mitch) DePauw, Tommy Sutliff, Tracie Sutliff, Kari (Rich) Beckman, Lynnette Standish, Kegan Ousley, Kasey Ousley, Michael Althoff, Amy Lyn Cornwell and Seth Izzard; and many wonderful great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place, and a private service will take place in the Munith Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Methodist Food Pantry, 423 W.
