Sanborn, 78, of Westland, formerly of Ionia, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998 at the Nightengale Convalescent Home in Westland. Mary Margaret Howard was born Jan. 29, 1920 in Ionia, the daughter of Frederick S. and Hazel G. (Bradford) Howard. She grew up in Ionia and graduated from Ionia High School. Mary attended Michigan State University for two years. She was married to Robert H. Sanborn in Ionia on April 2, 1939. Mary was a church organist for 50 years, playing for many churches throughout the state. She also was a choir director for many years for the public school system. Mary was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the order of the Eastern Star, and the D.A.R. Mayflower Society. Mary is survived by her husband, Robert H. Sanborn; two sons, Frederick H. Sanborn and Robert B. (Marianne) Sanborn; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Sarah Anne (Gerald) McCarthy; and nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. March 2 at the First United Methodist Church, Ionia, with Rev. Lawrence Hodge officiating. Interment will be in Easton Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday at the First United Methodist Church one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Envelopes will be available at the church or at the Cook Funeral Home, Rich Street Chapel, Ionia who is in charge of arrangements.
