S. Sanderson Over Forty Years a Resident of Ionia Passes Over Wm. S. Sanderson, passed away on 'Saturday evening, after a year's painful illness. Mr. Sanderson was born in Waterion, New York, Sep[t. 5, 1846. He came to Michigan with his parents in 1851, settling near Lansing. He came to Ionia in 1865, as a clerk for the firm of J.W. & M.H. Amphlett, who kept a crockery store in the building now occupied by J.C. Beattie. He subsequently became a partner in the business with M.H. Amphlett, and these two have been associated in business ever since, about 40 years, and he has made his home at the Amphlett residence all this time. Their business for many years has been as jobbers of clay hollow ware. Mr. Sanderson enlisted in the 29th Michigan infantry on its organization in 1864, when but 19 years of age, and served to close of war. He has always been an ardent G.A.R. man, serving four or five years ad adjutant of Wm. H. Borden post and filling other positions. As a business man he was trustworthy and efficient. He was a member of the Methodist church over 40 years, and was attentive to the obligations in service which this connection imposed. He leaves one brother, P.M. Sanderson of Mason, Mich. but no other near relatives. The funeral service was held at the Amphlett home at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The service was conducted by Rev. E.E. Branch of the Baptist church, in the absence of Dr. Cogshall of the Methodist church. The singing was by Mrs. Geo. F. Brown and Mrs. Frank Fuller, with Miss Leah Avery as organist. Bearers were Gen. J.H. Kidd, Gen. F.S. Hutchinson, Chas. C. Eyster, F.D. Curtis, J.H. Laden and H.P. Hilton. Interment, Highland Park. The following friends from out the city were present: Mrs. P.M.
