Heat, lightning, sunstroke and death all over the country. P. Ferry Sapp of Easton township was killed by lightning. The coroner held an inquest and said the lightning first struck the back of the head, cutting off a piece of the hat-band, then went around the right side of the neck and throat, where there was a hole where a portion of the electric fluid had apparently gone into the body. There were several abrasions of the skin as though he had been “peppered.” The collar was torn off his neck. The fluid then skipped to his legs, and taking the inner seems ripped both legs of the pantaloons completely from top to bottom, the threads, not the cloth, being cut. Then entering his shoes it tore them both off his feet and into shreds. It then bored two round smooth holes as if with an inch auger into the ground and disappeared. Easton and Ionia people were present at the inquest and every one of them speaking of the esteem in which the deceased had been held. The funeral services took place this afternoon, from the residents of Hon. J.C. Blanchard, in this city.
