The Ionia Daily Sentinel-Standard, Tuesday, March 9, 1954
Stephen Paul Sarley, 80, whose home was at 541 Hall street, died about 
midnight Monday in the Ionia County Memorial Hospital where he had been for 
over a week following an operation upon his stomach.  Mr. Sarley had been a 
resident of Ionia for over 40 years.

Services will be conducted Thursday morning at 9 o’clock from SS. Peter and 
Paul church, with burial in Mt. Olivet cemetery.  Rosary will be recited 
Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Meyers funeral home.

Surviving him are his wife, Theresa; two step-sons, Michael Zarish of Forest 
Park, Ill., and Joseph Zarish of Northville; two step-daughters, Mrs. 
Stephanie Halinar of Czechoslovakia and Mrs. H. O. Burke of Ionia; nine 
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Sarley was born May 8, 1874 in Trencin, Czechoslovakia, and came to the 
United States when a young man.  He traveled widely here working in 
Pennsylvania and Ohio tile factories, as a lumberjack in the forests of the 
state of Washington, and in the Salmon fishing industry on the Columbia river.

He settled in Ionia about forty years ago and was employed for 15 years by the 
Ypsilanti Reed Furniture company.  Then he devoted his energies to truck 
gardening at his Hall street home, a vocation he had followed for 30 years.  
As a truck gardener he prided himself on furnishing the earliest home-grown 
tomatoes to the Ionia market, and providing other garden vegetables to Ionia 
stores with the opening of and throughout each year’s growing season.
