Although Mr. Schaefer had been ailing for some time his illness had not been of a confining nature and on the day on his death he was around as usual and planning to make a trip to Pewamo. Shortly after dinner he was out on the lawn talking with William Dietz, a neighbor. After their conversation he went into the house to prepare for his trip to Pewamo when he was suddenly stricken, passing away about 50 minutes later. Mr. Schaefer was born in Westphalia township where he resided until 18 years ago when he sold his farm and purchased the place now owned by Louis Adams, near Portland. Eight years ago he disposed of that place and moved into the village, living here until his death. On April 3, 1873 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Fedewa, the couple celebrating their golden wedding last November. Besides the widow he is survived by eleven children, three daughters and eight sons. They are Mrs. William Leik, of Portland;; Mrs. William Miller, of Riley, Miss Irene of Lansing; Joseph of Pewamo; Matt of Riley, Edward of Lansing; Stephen of Cleveland; Leo and John, of Portland, Julius and Arnold, of Detroit. Funeral services will be held at St. Patrick church Saturday morning, in charge of Rev. Fr. O’Rourke.
