He was in active service in North Africa, Italy and Sicily, and was wounded in the Italian campaign in January, 1944. Louis was born in Ionia 32 years ago, the son of William Schafer, and was a graduate of SS. Peter and Paul high school in 1934. After his graduation he went to Detroit where he was employed until he enlisted in the army and served in the medical corps. For bravery in action as a rifleman aboard a destroyer in November, 1942, he received his first Silver Star and Oak Leaf Cluster. A second award was given for aid to two soldiers who were wounded in an attempt to reach a third wounded soldier. He is survived by his father, William Schafer, Ionia; four sisters, Mrs. Rosemary Pacquette and Mrs. Irwin Roskamp, of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Lloyd Drumm of Linden and Miss Esther Schafer of Lansing; three brothers, Francis of Detroit, John of Lansing and Wilbur of Muskegon. Services will be from Bradley Funeral Home at 8:30 Friday morning and from SS. Peter and Paul church at 9:00. Burial in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Rosary at Bradley’s at eight o’clock Thursday evening.
