Bernard “Bernie” G. Schafer, 83, of Pewamo, loving husband, father and 
grandfather and great grandfather, passed away on May 27, 2011. He was born on 
April 14, 1928 in St. Johns the son of William and Hildegard Schafer.

Bernie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pewamo. He owned and 
operated Schafer Petroleum for 53 years, enjoyed woodworking, spending time 
down at his pond and his ’65 Chevy Impala SS.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen in 2000.

Surviving are his children, Darrel (Karen) Schafer of Eagle, Denise Davis of 
Hudsonville, David (Melissa) Schafer of Pewamo and Douglas (Deb) Shafer of 
Mason; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; siblings, Henry Schafer, 
Louise (Francis) Feldpausch, Patricia (Roy) Howorth, Diane (Conrad) Conry and 
Ken (Katrinka) Schafer. 

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Charlon O. Mason at 11 
a.m., Wednesday June 1, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo. Rite of 
Committal will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. 
Tuesday at the St. Mary’s Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia St., Westphalia. 
The rosaries will be prayed at 8 p.m. Monday, 3 and 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church or the 
American Cancer Society in memory of Bernie.
