Raymond “Pete” Schafer, age 86, passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2009.  He 
was born on January 10, 1923 in Ionia the son of Lee and Agnes (Humphries) 
Schafer. 

Mr. Schafer was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, a graduate of 
Ss. Peter and Paul Academy in 1941 and a lifetime member of the Ionia Knights 
of Columbus Council.  He was a Veteran of World War II serving in the United 
States Army and he was a member of the American Legion #175 in Saranac and the 
Lyons/Muir VFW Post #4646.  He retired from General Tire in Ionia after 
several years of service. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Ruth Bauermeister, Louella 
Boyd, Katie Poole, Mary Edwards, Richard Schafer, and Robert Schafer. He 
married Mary Stratz on January 12, 1952 and she survives him. Also surviving 
are a sister, Virginia McKenna; sisters-in-law, Trudy and Arlene Schafer, 
Evelyn Weitzel and Augusta Stratz; special nieces, Judy (Edward) Clark and 
Gail (Dan) Lower; several nieces and nephews. 

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am Saturday, August 29, 
2009 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Rev. Thomas Boufford, 
presiding. Rite of Committal will take place at a later date at Mt. Olivet 
Catholic Cemetery, Ionia. The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-
Lehman Funeral Homes, Ionia from 6-8 p.m. Friday with a Scriptural Wake 
Service being held at 7 p.m. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be 
made to the Ss. Peter and Paul Parish or to the Ionia Knights of Columbus 
Council in memory of Raymond "Pete" Schafer.
