Ionia Sentinel-Standard - Sept. 30, 2008

Donald John Schafer, age 63, passed away as the result of a bicycle accident on 
Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 in Ionia County.

He was born Feb. 19, 1945 the son of Edward and Rita (Wohlfet) Schafer in Muir. 
Donald worked for General Motors in Lansing, retiring in 1994. He served his 
country in the National Guard. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church 
in Hubbardston. Donald enjoyed restoring old cars and went to many swap meets. 
He also spent many hours riding bike with his dog, Sammy. After retiring, he 
spent winters in Titusville, Fla.

He is survived by four brothers, Fred Schafer of Portland, Raymond Schafer of 
Houghton Lake, Louis (Celeste) Schafer of Lyons and Edwin (Mary) Schafer of 
Portland; four sisters, Joan Watson of DeWitt, Edna (Dennis) Benner of Fenwick, 
Loretta Temple of Sparta and Adeline (Ed) Reisbig of Ionia; sister-in-law Lucy 
Schafer of Muir; special friend Joan Ingraham and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Kenneth Schafer and one 
sister, Suzanna Schafer.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 at 11 a.m. at St. John the 
Baptist Catholic Church in Hubbardston. Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 1, 
2008 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary service at 7:30 p.m. at the Lux 
and Schnep funeral Home in Carson City. In lieu of flowers, memorial 
contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or St. John the 
Baptist Catholic Church. Online condolences may be sent to the family at
