She was born on January 14, 1933 in Bloomer Township the daughter of Jerry and Laudra (Tully) Ward. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy and worked as a Teacher Aide with the Carson City Public Schools for over 35 years, retiring in 2003. She was married to Joseph P. Schafer on August 29, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Carson City. Phyllis was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Altar Society. She was also a member of the Hubbardston Area Historical Society and enjoyed shopping and Saturday dinners after mass with her friends. Phyllis is survived by her children; Cynthia (John) Schneider of Carson City, Dr. Patrick (Lydia) Schafer of Toledo, OH, Daniel Schafer of Chicago, IL and Michelle (Terry) Tomek of Hilliard, Oh, six grandchildren; Joseph Patrick Schafer, Elizabeth Schafer, Alexandra Schneider, Blake Tomek, Hayleigh Tomek and Ross Tomek and a sister; Barb (Walt) Donohue of Perrinton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; Joseph in 1996, a daughter; Pamela Schafer, a son; Craig Schafer, two sisters; Dorothy Wolverton and Nova Blount, a brother; Paul Ward and a special niece; Karen Wolverton Lyon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 1 pm at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. Tom Thompson officiating. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 11 am until the time of services at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Hubbardston Area Historical Society or the Laurels of Carson City.
