                       Mary I. "Lightening" Schafer

Mary I. "Lightening" Schafer, 82, of Ionia passed away on Thursday, Dec. 23, 
2010. She was born on June 26, 1928 in Lansing the daughter of August and 
Catherine (Pung) Stratz.

Mary was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and a member of the Ladies 
Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus in Ionia. She graduated from Mt.Mercy 
School of Nursing and worked for 20 years at Heartland Healthcare in Ionia.On 
Jan. 25, 1952 she married Pete Schafer and he preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 
2009.

Mary is survived by her sisters,Sr. Augusta Stratz of Kalkaska and Evelyn 
Weitzel of Grand Ledge; nieces Judy (Ed) Clark of Ionia, Gail (Dan) Lower of 
Stanton and Weitzel family; and Mary's special cat, Katie.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev.Thomas Boufford at 11 
a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010 at  SS.Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ionia.Rite of 
Committal will be in the spring.The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. 
Monday, Dec.27, 2010 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia. 
The rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Knights of Columbus in Ionia.Online
