Scheid, 87, of Belding, died Friday afternoon Feb. 17, 2012 in Belding. Howard lived a life of the highest integrity in service to family, faith, community and country. The 5th of 7 children born to George and Lena Scheid, he worked with his brothers and sisters on the family farm. After graduating from Belding High School, he entered military service, seeing action in the Philippines during World War II and achieving the rank of Sergeant. After honorable discharge from the service, he returned home to the Belding community where he began his life's work. Many in the surrounding countryside were loyal Chevrolet customers during the time Howard was a salesman and then sales manager at Breimayer Chevrolet. Still others in the community benefited from his service to the parishes at St. Joseph's and St. Mary's Miriam and from his work on the parish councils and Holy Name Society. Howard pursued a calling to the permanent Diaconate in 1974 and served the people of both parishes until his retirement in 2010. During that time, he ministered to the elderly at the Belding Christian Nursing Home (now Metron), parishioners in the community who were able to attend Mass, and countless in the community wishing to be married and baptized in the Catholic Church. He ministered to the youth at the Honor Camp detention center in Greenville. He was active ecumenical circles as well, including founding and leading the community food and clothing pantry housed at St. Joseph's. Even after formal retirement from his deaconate duties, Howard maintained a schedule of visitation to those wishing to receive the Holy Sacrament, and regularly distributed Holy Communion during Mass. Howard's legacy lives on in his children; Mary Jo (Ken) Cusack, who has devoted her life to raising a strong and loving family, Barbara (Barry) Trierweiler, who served the people as Ionia County Clerk for many years, John (Dan) Scheid whose career in social work has focused on the care of the elderly, Joseph (Tracy) Scheid who has carried both the traditions of woodworking and fostering youth, Jeanette (Cindy) Scheid, who has served children and families as a physician and Daniel (Kate) Scheid, the rector of St. Augustine of Canterbury in Benton Harbor. Howard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret (Reitz) Scheid; his six children; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and by his brothers, Dick, Paul and Jack; his sister Thelma (Scheid) Caverley; and his brother-in-law, Fr. Joseph Reitz. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Harold Scheid; and his sister, Doris (Scheid) Glomstad. His steadfast loyalty, wisdom, energy and wit will be sorely missed by all who were blessed to know him. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Belding with Bishop Walter Hurley presiding. Rite of Committal will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Belding.
