NOON James S Scheidt, pioneer Lake Odessa business man, died at his home above the Scheidt hardware store here, about noon Wednesday following several weeks of failing health. He was 85 years old and had been known as "Jim" to his many friends throughout the community for many years. He was born in Kutztown, Pa., on September 22, 1858, this town having been named after his grandfather Kutz. When about 17 years of age he went to work in his father's blacksmith shop there to learn the trade, and about 1887 he came to Nashville, Mich. It was at Nashville that he became acuainted with the future Mrs. Scheidt, Miss Dora A. McGraw. They were married on February 3, 1889, and had Mr. Scheidt lived until February 3, 1889, next they would have been married 54 years. To this union were born five children, Gretchen (Mrs Jerry O'Meara) who died in 1927, Glendon and Bernard in Lake Odessa, Mrs. Howard Northrup (Doris) and Mrs. Gayle Galloway (Bernice) at Ionia. Comng to Lake Odessa in the fall of 1888, Mr. Scheidt secured employment in the William Shaffer blacksmith shop, and a year later built his own shop building. He purchased his present business location in 1895, where he and "Sam" R. McIntyre conducted a meat market for a few years, and in 1903 he put in a stock of hardware and this has been known as the Scheidt Hardware store ever since. Mr. Scheidt had been a member of the Odd Fellows, Masons, K of P., and Elks lodges at various times in the past years. Surviving are the widow, Dora, the four children, 20 grandchildren of whom two grandsons are in the U.S. A. and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services wil be held from the Wortley & Baine chapel at 2 Friday, with burial in Lakeside cemetery.
