Robert C. (Bob) Scheurer, Sr., “Grandpa,” 81, of Portland, passed away on 
Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002 after a long battle with cancer.  He was born on Oct. 
16, 1921 in Orange Township, the son of Albert and Maude (Hopkins) Scheurer.  
He would go on to marry Joyce Elaine Parker on December 11, 1942.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant from 1942 to 1945.  He 
retired from TRW in Portland in 1984.  He also was a manager of the Portland 
Elevator for many years.  Bob “Grandpa” was a lifelong farmer and an avid 
antique tractor puller.  He belonged to Lyons Riverbend Haulers, Sunfield 
Haulers, and Clintonia Antique Farm Power club.  Bob was a member of the 
American Legion and a friend of the 4-H Service Club.

He is survived by his children Sharon and Gary Forquer of Cedar Springs, Iowa; 
Robert and Connie Scheurer Jr. of Muir. Cathy and Victor Johnson of Portland; 
six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister Jean Hausserman; one 
brother, Allen and Berneda Scheurer; and several nieces and nephews. 
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Joyce; his brothers, Harold, 
Shirley (Shird) and Kenneth.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at LeValley United Methodist 
Church with the Rev. David Flagel officiating.   Interment will be at Balcom 
Cemetery.  Visitation is 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Lake 
Funeral Home in Ionia; and 10 a.m. Monday until time of serve at LeValley 
United Methodist Church.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the 
Ionia County 4-H service Club or Ionia County Commission on Aging.
