Washington, Ionia, died Wednesday in Mercy Hospital at Grayling. She had been a patient there for five days. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 24, 1897, the daughter of George and Catherine Mayer Smith. She was married to William Schlernitzauer in Toledo, Ohio on Dec. 15, 1915. They made their home in Ohio until moving to Ionia in 1923. She and her husband started Frank's five and dime on Main Street, which eventually grew into a chain of five stores. Four of the stores were sold in 1950. The Lowell store was operated by their son, Richard, until being sold in 1975. Mrs. Schlernitzauer's husband preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 1977. After that she made her home with her daughter at Long Lake and part time with her son in Grayling. Survivors include a son, Richard, of Grayling; a daughter, Mrs. Arlo (Helen) Catt, of Long Lake; five grandchildren: eight great grandchildren; two brothers, William Smith of St. Petersburg, Fla; George Smith of Toledo, Ohio ; a sister, Mrs. Annetta Hudson, of St. Petersburg, Fla. Mrs. Schlernitzauer was a life member of the Ionia Eastern Star, a former member of the Ladies' Literary Club and the Business and Professional Women's Club. Funeral services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Leddick Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Harger of Shiloh Community Church officiating. Entombment will be at the Highland Park Mausoleum.
