IONIA- William N. Schlernitzauer, 89, a long time resident of 218 E. Washington 
street died Thursday at the home of a son in Grayling following a short illness.

Mr. Schlernitzauer was born March 7, 1888 in Durhamville, New Your, the son of 
Frank and Wilhemina Carman Schlernitzauer.

He married the former Veronica (Vera) M. Smith December 15, 1915 in Toledo, 
Ohio. They made their home in Ohio until moving to Ionia in 1923.

Mr. Schlernitzauer started Frank's 5 & 10¢ store on Main street in Ionia, later 
expanding it to a chain of five stores. The corporation was dissolved and four 
stores sold in 1950 to D & C stores. Mr. Schlernitzauer's son, Richard, kept and 
operated the Lowell store until 1975.

He was a member of the Ionia Masonic lodge, Ionia Elks, a former Rotarian, one 
of the founders, past president and director of the Ionia Hunting and Fishing 
club. He also served as director and district chairman of Michigan United 
Conservation Clubs and was a lifelong conservationist. 

Survivors include his wife, Vera; one son, Richard of Grayling, one daughter, 
Mrs. Arlo (Helen) Catt of Long Lake; five grandchildren and six great-
grandchildren.

Services are Saturday at 2 pm from the Leddick funeral home with entombment in 
the Highland Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home Friday, 7 to 9 
pm.
