Schmidt, age 83 of Ionia, passed away October 12, 2004 at his home. He was born June 8, 1921 in Ionia the son of Orin and Bessie (Randall) Schmidt. He married Mildred McArthur in January of 1944, in Detroit. She preceded him in death July 1, 2000. He was a World War II Veteran. Gordon was a police officer for the City of Detroit for 25 years until retiring in 1971. He was a member of Detroit Police Officers Association and a past member of the Saranac American Legion and Sheridan VFW. He is survived by his daughter Karen (Bill) Whorley of Saranac, Patricia (Tim) Guarino of Coldwater; brother, Earl (Lynn) Schmidt of Ionia; sister Carol (George) Frisbey of Harbor Springs; grandchildren Patrick (Cara) Whorley of Stanwood, Michael (Nicole) Whorley of Saranac, Mark Whorley of Wisconsin, Elizabeth Guarino of Coldwater and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother Leland Schmidt and one sister Madeline Cook. Memorial services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with Rev. Kendall Harger officiating. Interment Easton Cemetery 2 p.m. where military honors will be performed. Anyone wishing may make memorial contributions to Ionia Area Hospice.
