Mrs. Gertrude Schmidt was born in Portland November 4, 1881, and was a 
daughter of John A. McClelland and a sister of Mrs. E. A. Richards and Will 
McClelland.  She was a graduate of the Portland high school after taking a 
position as teacher in the schools at Oklahoma City, where she met and married 
Mr. Schmidt in January 23, 1914.  For some time after their marriage they 
resided at St. Joseph, Missouri, afterward locating at Des Moines, Iowa, where 
her death occurred last Friday morning, following an illness of pneumonia.

Although it was known that she was seriously ill the announcement of her death 
was a distinct shock to her many friends who were anxiously looking for her 
recovery.  The news of illness reached here early in the week, when her 
father, John A. McClelland immediately left for her bedside, arriving shortly 
before her death.  Upon receiving the sad news Mr. and Mrs. will McClelland 
and Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Richards left for Des Moines, where burial was made, 
returning home Wednesday evening.

Her husband, who had been in Germany on a business trip, was on his way home 
and every effort made to reach him by wireless, informing him of the serious 
condition of his wife, but the first intimation he had of her illness and 
death was contained in a telegram which was handed him as his boat docked in 
the city of New York.

Mrs. Schmidt is also survived by two children, a boy of eight years and a girl 
of six.  The little boy was seriously ill with pneumonia and for several days 
his life was in danger, but those returning from their sad mission bring the 
report that he is now recovering rapidly.
