Joan J. "Sis"Schmitz
Westphalia
Joan J. Schmitz, age 87, of Westphalia passed away peacefully on Monday, 
September 18, 2017 with her family by her side. She was born August 4, 1930, 
the daughter of Leo and Theresa (Fox) Spitzley, Sr. She was a devoted member 
of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Joan 
enjoyed crocheting, reading, and most of all, spending time with her family 
and friends.

She is survived by her cherished husband of 56 years and outstanding 
caretaker, Edward J. Schmitz; daughters Amy (Larry Feldpausch) Heckman and 
Geri Lynn Schmitz; grandchildren, Derrick (Veronica), Kyle (Tasha) Megan 
(Nick), and Cody; special great-granddaughter, Audrina; brothers, Philip, 
Roy, and Alvin (Rosemary); sister, Wilma; and sister-in-law, JoAnn. Joan is 
preceded in death by her parents; sister, Alice; sister-in-law, Mary Ann, 
Laurine, Germaine, Betty, Mary Ann and Alice; and brothers-in-law, Raymond 
and Louis.

The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Fr. Eric Weber at 10:30 
a.m., Friday, September 21, 2017 at St Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia. 
Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The family 
will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the St. Mary's 
Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia St., Westphalia. The rosaries will be 
prayed at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at the chapel. The Schmitz 
family would like to extend a heartfelt "thank you" to Carson City Home 
Health Care for the wonderful care they took of Joan. Arrangements are
