He was born in Ionia, Jan. 15, 1868, and his home had always been in the same house where he was born. His father died many years ago, and his mother Nov. 15 last. Soon after this Hugo went to Colorado, in hopes of benefit to his health, but the change was of no avail, and he returned home a few weeks ago in condition that afforded no ground of hope to the friends. Since his return he has been at the home of his sister, Mrs. L.P. Schmolz, and later at the John Schilds home on Dexter street, where he passed away. He leaves one brother, Frank; and two sisters, Mrs. L.P. Schmolz of this city, and Mrs. Chas. Oscar of Boyne City. Hugo was one of those genial, kindly souls, who attract friends and keep them, and his early death is generally deplored. ---- A large number of friends assembled at the Church of SS. Peter & Paul Mon. morning, to pay a parting tribute of respect to Hugo Schmucker. The service was one of much sorrow, for deceased was genuinely regarded by all who knew him in his lifetime, and those friends were many. While deceased had grown to manhood in our midst, yet he was always remembered by the older people as the “boy wonder cornet player,” and many are the audiences he delighted with his playing in his boyhood days. A company of local musicians, who had been associated with Hugo in the band, acted as escort from the home to the cemetery, and the remains were carried to the grave by James Scully, Harry H. McGowan, Frank M. Wirtz, Thomas F. McGannon, Edward Scheidt, and John J. Spitzley.
