After two years of intense but patient suffering with cancer, Mrs. Fred Schrader, a well known and highly esteemed Portland woman, passed away Monday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock at her farm home near Collins, four miles northwest of this village, in the Christian Bend neighborhood. Her health had been on a steady decline ever since her operation at the White Hospital, in Portland, two years ago, and all hope of her recovery had long been despaired of. Despite her protracted illness, she was courageous and cheerful to the very end, all efforts to persuade her to go to bed having failed until about two weeks ago, when her strength gave out so completely that she was compelled to give up the fight. Ms. Schrader’s maiden name was Ida Sowle. She was born in Indiana January 16, 1867, and at the age of six months came with her mother, a widow, to Livingston County, Michigan, where she lived until she reached the age of 19 years. On March 24, 1886, she was married to Mr. Schrader, then a young farmer, who owned a farm near Fowlerville. This was their home for about 16 years. They then sold their farm near Fowlerville and lived in Lansing for about a year and a half, moving to their present farm home 16 years ago last February. Mrs. Schrader was an industrious and capable woman and will be greatly missed in her household and neighborhood. She was a member of the Portland Congregational Church and an active worker in the Woman’s Guild until failing health compelled her to relinquish these duties. She is survived by a son, Harold Schrader, who is employed in Lansing, and a half brother, Cyrus Carr, of Williamston. These, besides the husband, are her only relatives. Rev. Truman F. Galt officiated at the funeral services, which were held at the late home Wednesday afternoon. Burial took place in the Portland Township Cemetery.
