January 18, 1940 LARGE FUNERAL FOR SAMUEL SCHULER The Evangelical church was filled with friends, neighbors, and admirers of the life of Samuel Schuler on Thursday of last week. The Rev. H.E. Kohn, the pastor, had charge of the service with presiding Elder Fuchs giving the sermon. The Rev. A.J. Hettler of Blissfield also assisted. The singing was by Mr and Mrs.Harold Smith. Burial was at Lakeside cemetery. OBITUARY Samuel Christian Schuler as born September 3, 1870, in Woodland township on the farm which today is part of the farm he owned and where he spent his entire life. He was the youngest child of Conrad and Caroline (Voelker) Schuler. The Schulers' were among the pioneer settlers fo Woodland township and also charter members of the Woodland Evangelical church. Through the trials and hardships of pioneer life, they still were zealous in rearing their family in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Samuel C. was converted on February 3,1896, at the age of 25 years, under the ministry of the Rev.J.M.Fuchs who was assisted by the Rev. F.Klump in the series of revival services held during that winter. On March 19 of the same years he joined the church which he has served so faithfully down through the years. He held the offices of steward and exhorter, and on January 4, 1904, he was chose a trustee, which office he held continuously until January 1, 1940. On September 29, 1896, he was united with Lydia Eckardt in the bonds of holy matrimony by the Rev. J.M.Fuchs. to this union were born five daughters, Gertrude Ruth who died in Infancy, Frieda, Helena, Esther, and Lorna Gertrude who preceded her father in leaving this earthly habitation by about five years. Mr. Schuler took a deep interest in the welfare of the community as well as in the welfare of the church. He served faithfully as a member of the school board for a period of 40 years, first in the rural school district, and when Woodland township voted to consolidate, he was made a member of the new school board, resigning from that position last July because of ill health. He was also a member of the Farmers and Merchants Depositors Corporation of Lake Odessa. Because of his sterling character and fine judgement he was a valuable man in whatever position he was placed, carrying carefully and conscientiously the responsibilities which were his. He departed from this life at 12:30 a,m. Sunday Jan.7, 1940, at the age of 69 years, four months, and four days. In his passing the family has lost a kind, devoted husband and a wonderful father; the church and community truly a Christian citizen. He leaves to mourn their loss, his widow, three daughters, Frieda Cooke on the home farm, Helena Marston, Lakeview, Esther Schuler, Tucson, Ariz. a foster brother, Rex Rowlader in Woodland, with a host of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Mary Kunz, Mr and Mrs. Lewie Eckardt, Fred Eckardt, Mrs Ida Leader and son Hubert, Mrs.Clara Cooke, Mrs Grace Williams, Mr and Mrs Harold Cooke, Grand Rapids; Mr and Mrs Lafe Williams, Freeport; Mr and Mrs Andrew Finkbeiner, Middleville. Mr and Mrs Leslie Adams, Mr and Mrs Clyde Walton, Maple Grove; Mr and Mrs Jacob Rehor, Albert Bessmer, Charlotte, and John Ketchum, Hastings.
