Sentinel-Standard - Wednesday, June 18, 1969

Claude R. Schwartz, 64, died at his home on North State road Tuesday, following 
an extended illness.

He was born February 27, 1908 in Highmore, S.D. and graduated from Gales, Ill. 
high school. He attended Michigan State university in East Lansing where he was 
a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and was an active member at the time of 
his death.

He was a gardener at Ionia State hospital for a number of years. In 1934 he was 
married to the former Josephine Sherwood.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the 63rd infantry division and 8th 
service command. After discharge from the service in 1945 he was engaged in 
dairy farming for a number of years.

He was a vocational agriculture instructor for Veterans institute in both Ionia 
and Saranac schools and was also a soil tester for Ionia county agriculture 
office for a number of years.

Prior to his illness he was employed at the former Mitchell Bentley corporation 
and A.O. Smith corporation. 

Surviving are his wife Josephine; a sister Mrs. A.J. Draper of Pekin, Ill; and 
for brothers, Lt. Col. G.T. Schwartz of Lynn Haven, Fla., Donald and Stanley of 
Decatur, Ill., and John of Moline, Ill.

Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Robert McComm at Myers funeral home 
Friday at 2 pm. The family will be at the funeral home Thursday evening.

A memorial fund is being established for the American Cancer society.
