The accident happened when Scott was driving north on M-91 south of Belding and from unexplainable reasons the car left the pavement and after careening through a shallow ditch came to rest against a tree. Injured in the accident were Alden VanWormer, 20, of this city, and his sister, Maxine, 71. Ray Tobian, of Belding route one, and Ray Pumphrey and his wife, who were driving by, came upon the tragic scene about 2:15 and called a Belding ambulance and Chief of Police Clarence North. Scott was pinned within the car and was believed to have died instantly. The VanWormer girl was thrown clear of the wreck but young VanWormer was caught in such a way that his left leg was badly broken. Both VanWormer and his sister were reported in critical condition by doctors at Belding City Hospital. Maxine was released Monday but physicians would not say when young VanWormer could be released. Exact time of the accident had not yet been determined but it was thought the trio had been there for some time prior to the discovery by the Tobias-Pumphrey party. Douglas William Scott was born in Detroit, July 20, 1927, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Scott. Twelve years ago the family moved to this city where he finished his schooling and enlisted in the army air force during World War II. He served as a radio technician in this branch and after the war served with the merchant marine for a year. Funeral services were held from the Fitzjohn Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock with the American Legion service at River Ridge cemetery following. Reverend H. S. Ellis officiated. Pallbearers were Stanley King, Dave Greenop, Roger Williams, Frank Beebe, Winston Setchfield and Robert Cichy. The Blue Star Mothers attended the service in a body.
