SCOTT PASSED AWAY WEDNESDAY MORNING. After a Week's Illness - He was an Esteemed Citizen - K. of P. an Elk. Funeral Friday Afternoon from the Episcopal Church. Although the condition of George M. Scott had been critical at all times during the past few days, the change for the better, announced on Tuesday, cast a new ray of hope over Ionians generally. But the change was of brief duration for he began to grow worse about midnight Tuesday, and at ten minutes of two o'clock yesterday morning his suffering was over. Though this ending was not unexpected, the news Wednesday came as a shock, and the deepest sorrow was expressed on every side at his untimely demise. George M. Scott was born in Gratiot county in 1870, being 29 years of age the sixth of last February. He came with his parents to Ionia in 1873, where he has since resided at the old home in South Ionia in his youth, and in the city during the late years of his life. A week ago Tuesday while at work at N. Kenyon's hardware store, he stepped upon a small table, and in getting down his shoe caught, throwing him violently to the floor. It is thought that the fall had much to do with his death, though cerebro-spinal meningitis is also coupled with his demise. Mr. Scott was of a genial and happy disposition, characteristics which made him warm and true friends. For several years he was a member of the well known shoe firm of Scott & Gadd, retiring about two years ago, and later reentering the employ of Mr. Kenyon. He was a rising young business man, of high character, one Ionia can illy afford to lose. He is survived by one brother, Mike B. Scott, of this city, and one sister, Etta Scott, of Muskegon. The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. W.H. Thomas, D.D., from St. John's Episcopal church at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon. Deceased being at the time of his death a member of Lucullus Lodge, No. 76, K. of P. that order will attend in a body, escorting the remains to Balcom cemetery where they will conduct the last solemn services according to their ritual. Mr. Scott was also a member of Daisy Lodge of Elks, No. 48, of Grand Rapids. There are several members of the order in this city and they will attend, while possibly there may be a delegation from Grand Rapids. Additional Comments: Daily Standard - Saturday, April 15, 1899 The symptoms attending George Scott's illness were for the two days last past so encouraging, that his friends were not prepared this morning to learn the news of his death, which occurred at 1:50. A change for the worse appeared at about 9 o'clock last night, and his heart action was not strong enough to carry him through. The funeral will be on Friday afternoon, and will be under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias. The kindly acts during the illness of our brother, George W. Scott, were so many and from so many sources, that we must return thanks for the same in this public way. They contributed very materially toward relieving his suffering, and are truly appreciated by us. We are also grateful for the many favors at time of burial. Charles M.
