The deceased was born in the town of Wolcott, Wayne county, New York, July 28, 1818, and came to Michigan with her husband 24 years ago. Her only children (Helen, wife of Geo. Dinsmore, and Rose, wife of E. B. Powell) are living to mourn the loss of an affectionate mother. The last illness of the deceased, inflammation of the lungs, was only of about a week’s duration, yet it was severe, and her sufferings were very great; still in the midst of it all she exhibited that sweet resignation which comes from a firm faith in the Eternal Goodness. The thought of that Goodness was her greatest joy in life and the strength and consolation of her last hours. Mrs. Scott was a woman of deep and genuine Christian character, a true and affectionate wife, a devoted mother, a warm and trustful friend. Her temper was mild and even; she always “possessed her soul in patience.” A friend remarked that “it was wonderful how she bore all that Providence or duty imposed upon her.” She was a firm believer in the doctrine of the great Salvation, and aimed to embody its principles in her every-day life. Though a member of no church, she intended to unite with the communion of her choice (the Universalist) the very Sabbath upon which her spirit winged its way home to join the church of the New Jerusalem, and to worship in the “Temple not made with hands.” Farewell, mother, until we greet thee in the sweet by-and-by.
