A. Scoville Answers Last Call Passed Away at His Residence in the Village Sunday Afternoon L. A. Scoville, one of the very few remaining pioneers of Campbell township, died at his home here Sunday afternoon following a lingering illness of many months, having nearly reached the age of 76 years. Mr. Scoville was taken ill in 1917, going to Florida in the fall with the hope of recovering, but following his return home his condition did not improve and he has been confined to his home more or less since then. In the death of Mr. Scoville, Clarksville and Campbell township not only loses one of its early settlers and pioneers, who toiled long and industriously to clear the land for farms and homes, but also one who as a man has done considerable in many ways to bring about improved conditions for all. Firm of nature, he builded for himself a prosperity which enabled him to bestow upon his friends those kindnesses that were his pleasure. Everyone found in him a trusted friend, a good companion, and good council. He was ever a strong champion of progressiveness. Mr. Scoville was connected in many ways with the business interests of the entire community, having conducted a mercantile line, stack business and farming, in all of which he was very successful. He served for twenty consecutive years as justice of the peace. He, also, was closely linked with local financial interests, being at the time of his death president of the Edwin Nash State Bank. Of all his commendable characteristics, one of the strongest perhaps was his admiration for ability, and never was he known to deny any person, who applied, employment and a chance to prove his worth. In view of these things our people have admired and respected him to the fullest and feel that his death marks the close of a life of usefulness and benefit. He was a life member of the F. & A. M. and Eastern Star. Leroy Alonzo Scoville was born in Marion County, Montgomery Township, Ohio, August 20, 1843. At the age of about 18 he enlisted at Sedalia, Mo., in the 1st regiment Missouri cavalry, serving three years and four months in the Civil War, afterwards coming to Michigan where he has since resided with the exception of about three years which was spent in California. On February 10, 1868, he was united in marriage to Martha Jane Hogle, who preceded her husband in death November 25, 1912. To this union were born five sons: James L., 1868; Eugene L., 1874; Claude E., 1877; and Glenn H., 1882, all of whom are now living; also Fred Lawrence, who died October 29, 1897, these, beside many other relatives and friends, remaining to mourn their loss. The deceased was a descendant of the Scovilles of Wessex, an honorable and ancient family, ancestral to the Scovilles of America, Mr. Scoville’s ancestral parentage being traceable to the Scovilles’ of Scotland. The funeral services were held from the residence at 2 o’clock, Wednesday, conducted by the Clarksville Masonic order, the Rev. Husted of Shelby officiating. Interment was made in the Clarksville cemetery.
