Daily Sentinel-Standard - Monday, May 30, 1948

Mrs. Anthony Scully, 68, who resided with her daughter, Mrs. Adelaide Danner, 
at 141 Lafayette street, died at 1 a.m. Sunday at the Ionia Convalescent home 
after being a patient there for five months. She had been in poor health for 
the past five years.

She was born in Detroit, September 2, 1880, the daughter of Ezra and Mary 
Elizabeth Ockford, Oct. 10, 1900, she married Anthony Scully in St. Mary's 
church, Lansing. They moved to Ionia at the time of the founding of the Barrett-
Scully Cigar company in Ionia in 1901. She lived on Rich street for 33 years. 
Mrs. Scully was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul church, the Elks' auxiliary and 
the Ionia Country club. She was an active sports enthusiast throughout her 
life. Her husband died August 25, 1945.

She leaves six daughters, Mrs. W.G. Hawley of Ionia, Mrs. George W. Kuhn of 
Lansing, Mrs. Russell K. Earl of St. Ignace, Mrs. Adelaide Danner of Ionia, 
Mrs. D.L. Bailey of Buffalo, N.Y., and Mrs. John LaChapelle of St. Ignace; two 
sons, George Scully of Traverse City, and James Scully of Manistique; 13 
grandchildren, and two brothers, George VanBuren of Birmingham and William 
VanBuren of Detroit. 

Services will be conducted from SS. Peter and Paul church Wednesday morning at 
9 o'clock with interment in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Rosary will be said at the 
home of the daughter at 141 Lafayette street, Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock.
