Sept. 13—Railroad Commissioner James Scully died at 5 o’clock this afternoon at his home in this city where for two weeks he has been critically ill with typhoid pneumonia contracted August 9 in Saginaw. Last night he showed slight signs of improvement though oxygen was resorted to. Up to 3 o’clock this afternoon the case was hopeful. At 4 o’clock he was taken alarmingly worse and the end came within an hour. One of the pathetic incidents is the presence of Mr. Scully’s father, Anthony Scully, 81 years old of Howell, who this afternoon was hopeful with hope which was shattered in so short a time after. This is the first death in a family of five children. James was born in Oceola county near Howell January 13, 1862. He grew up in Howell where he taught school until he came to Ionia to enter the law offices of A. A. Ellis. He was admitted to the Ionia bar in 1890 and became a member of the firm of Chaddock and Scully until 1904 when the firm of Davis and Scully was formed. E. M. Davis withdrew last year after which Mr. Scully was alone until January when he became associated with F. O. Eldred and the firm was known as Scully and Eldred. He leaves a wife but no children, one brother, Anthony Scully of Ionia and three sisters, Mrs. John McQuillin of Detroit, Mrs. Willis L. Lyons of Howell and Mrs. Mary Bergin of Howell and Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Scully of Howell, his father and mother, who have been here for several days. Mr. Scully was a prominent Ionia Elk, Knight of Columbus, and had been mayor of Ionia twice. He was appointed a member of the railroad commission by Governor Warner in September 1907, and served continuously until the time of his death.
