All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Marilyn Ransom mlnransom@chartermi.net June 25, 2010, 2:27 pm The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Saturday, March 31, 1934 William Seabrook, 56, was decapitated and his wife Martha, 50, was seriously injured about 3:15 Friday afternoon when their car was struck broadside by the 5 o’clock Grand Trunk passenger flyer in the village limits of Muir. Seabrook was killed instantly and his mangled body was dragged about 100 feet west on the road and by the train. He evidently had been thrown through the driver’s window of his two door sedan in front of the swift moving train. Mrs. Seabrook narrowly escaped being crushed beneath the wheels of the train. She was found lying a few feet north of the track, unconscious but soon revived, and was able to sit up. She was taken to the Ionia hospital where it was revealed she had sustained two severe lacerations of the head and a possible fracture of the skull. Attendants said she would probably recover. Seabrook, a CWA worker and a painter and paper hanger lived on West Washington street, Ionia. Both Seabrook and his wife formerly lived in Muir and were returning to their home in Ionia after visiting friends and relatives when the accident occurred. C. V. Sands, 426 Washington street, Ionia, and R. J. Banion of Ionia were eye witnesses of the accident. Both said Seabrook approached the crossing on the pavement from the south side in Muir and the car was struck by the train as it started across the first rack. The car struck a red warning signal. The signal was broken down and rendered useless following the impact of the car. The ….. to the car indicated that it had been pushed off the track by the train … then cruised beneath it wheels. A nephew of Seabrook’s was injured on the east crossing of Muir in the same manner about years ago. Several Ionia county residence have been killed and many injured in train…(illegible). Mr. Seabrook’s death was the second in the family under almost identical circumstances. On November 15, 1921 Lewis Ney Seabrook along with a nephew and Walter Rushford also of Ionia, were mortally injured when a truck Ney was driving was struck at the eastern crossing in Muir by a Grand Trunk train. Both Rushford and Ney Seabrook lived for several hours and were removed to Ionia where …… Old Bailey House. Mr. Seabrook was born in Muir in 1878 and was married to Martha Farrer of Muir and have been for the past 22 years residents of Ionia living at the time of his death at 422 Pleasant Street. Mr. Seabrook had been a painter for 30 years. He is survived by his wife, two brothers, George and Harry, both of Ionia. He was a member of the Modern Woodman lodge and of the Presbyterian church of Muir. Funeral services will be held at the Stone funeral home Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Burial will be at the Muir cemetery.
