An accident on Interstate 96 last week took the life of a Portland woman. On May 3 at 10:06 a.m., deputies from the Ionia County Office were dispatched to I-96 near Kent Street in Portland Township to the report of a pedestrian versus semi truck personal injury accident. Preliminary investigation revealed that a semi truck driven by a 46-year-old man from Shasta Lake, Calif. was traveling westbound on I-96 near Kent Street, when 48-year old Kathy Seal of Portland stepped into the path of the semi truck. The semi truck then struck Seal who was pronounced deceased on the scene of the traffic crash. The semi driver was uninjured. Preliminary investigation indicates that speed, alcohol, and safety belt usage were not factors in the crash. This incident remains under investigation by the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office. Assisting on scene were the Portland Police Department, Portland Fire and Ambulance, Michigan State police – Motor Carrier Division, and Reed and Hoppes Towing. This accident created a subsequent personal injury accident on westbound I-96 near Peake road. A person from Sparta, driving a Dodge delivery van, rear-ended a tractor trailer driven by a driver from Detroit. The Sparta driver was transported to Sparrow Hospital via Portland Ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. The driver from Detroit was uninjured. The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police, Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division, Portland Ambulance, and Keusch’s Towing. ----- Kathy Sue Seal of Portland was born in Columbia City, Ind., May 5, 1957 and died May 3, 2006. She graduated from Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo. and Colorado State University with a degree in business/sociology. She was a giftware sales representative and enjoyed photography, singing, gardening, playing games and renovating homes. Her family was the love of her life. She is survived by her husband of 10 years, Rory Seal of Portland; parents Arthur and Patricia Flickinger of Fairfax Station, Va.; brothers, Steve of Littleton, Colo., Stan of Morrison, Colo., Scott of Montross, Va., Seth of Stephen City, Va. and sister, Kay Kern of Hilton Head, S.C.; and 12 nieces and nephews. Services were held May 8 at Portland Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Daniel Stemen officiating. Interment was at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Noble County, Ind. Her uncle, Rev. Gene Flickinger of Kendallville, Ind. presided over the graveside services. Arrangements were handled by Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.
