At the same time services were being held at Alberta with the same songs sung, “Jesus, Lover of My Soul,” “Rock of Ages” and “Nearer My God to Thee.” Rev. C. C. Buckner spoke very comforting to the people, how the feelings for the loss of those we love should be controlled. Many beautiful flowers were brought by friends and relatives. Bert was 46 years old and leaves a wife and five children. Norman was 28 years old and leaves a wife and three children. They also leave parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Setchfield of southeast Ionia; and two sisters, Mrs. Philip Baker of Marion and Mrs. Ralph Snooks, McBride. Also an aunt, Mrs. John Hicks, Ionia, who is a sister of their mother, Mrs. George Setchfield. The boys left the house the morning of Labor day to go duck hunting and failed to return at night. The alarm was not give until morning and in the afternoon of the next day the bodies were found clasped together in the lake where they lost their lives. Subsequent Publication: Wednesday, September 18, 1918 Bert L. and Norman M. Setchfield, oldest and youngest sons of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Setchfield of Ionia township, were born at Ferris, Montcalm County, Bert, December 15, 1882 and Norman October 24, 1891. Until they went to the northwest their lives were spent in Montcalm and Ionia counties. Both boys made a confession of faith and were baptized. In 1904 Bert was united in marriage to Katherine Brown of Ionia township, who with five children, two sons and three daughters, survive him. Norman was marred in 1912 to Donna Bugbee and to them have been born one son and two daughters, who are living. In 1914 Bert moved to Alberta, Canada. He was followed in 1916 by Norman and his family. There they have lived together, sharing each other’s work and pleasures as they had in former years. There they passed from earth clasped in each other’s arms Sept. 2, 1918, and were buried together. That they and their families have made a place for themselves in the lives and hearts of the community where they have made their home was shown by the spontaneous response of everybody for miles around to render aid and comfort as though they had been their own kin. They were pioneers in a new country and success was about to crown their efforts. Besides their individual families and their parents, they are survived by two sisters and a brother, Mrs. Phil Baker, Marion, Mich.; Mrs. Ralph Snook, McBride, and Richard Setchfield, Ionia township.
