April 7, 2016 RUTH EVELYN SEYBOLD 1926-2016 Ruth Evelyn Seybold, 89, of the Sunfield/Portland area, passed into the arms of Jesus on April 5, 2016. She was able to join her husband, Ken in heaven on their 69th wedding anniversary. She was born on Oct. 24, 1926, in East Jordan, Michigan, the daughter of Henry and Fannie (Vance) VanDeventer. Growing up a minister's daughter taught her a strong faith in God and the people around her. Ruth married Kenneth L. Seybold on April 5, 1947 in Ionia, Michigan. He preceded her in death on Sept. 22, 1987. They raised farm crops, animals and she always had a huge garden. She was known for her canning, cooking and the best bread rolls, She always had a smile, a story and an extra plate at the table for anyone who dropped in at the farm. Ruth always made her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids the most important thing in her life, and they always felt her love. She always made their favorite birthday cakes and read to the grandkids before macular degeneration stole most of her eyesight. Ruth was a member of the Sebewa Center United Methodist church, participating in the ladies aid association and neighborhood birthday club. For the past 15 years, Ruth has traveled all over the United States and Canada with her love, Dale Petrie. They made two trips to Alaska, traveled to the western states and the East Coast. They spent winters in Okeechobee, Florida sightseeing, riding in the golf cart around their park and cruising the canals on their pontoon boat. In recent summers, they spent several weeks in the Mackinaw and Sault St. Marie areas watching the big ships and the parades over the Mackinaw Bridge. Dale always took great care of Ruth even as her health declined. In recent years, she has had many bouts of congestive heart failure, which never kept her down long, and then she'd be ready for he next trip or adventure in her life. She never complained about the hand she was dealt in life and never talked bad about other people. Everyone that knew her called her "Mom" or a dear friend. Dementia took many of her memories in recent years, but cannot take away the wonderful memories she left behind with her family. We are all better people because of her love and caring ways. Ruth is survived by one daughter, Judy and Paul Jackson of Lake Odessa; one son, Kenneth and April Seybold of Portage; four grandchildren, Julie and Todd Simmons, Derrick and Chanda Stair, Alexandria Seybold, Kenneth Seybold; three great grandchildren Peyton Rheingans, Keagan Stair and Amber Simmons; one brother Forrest and Nancy VanDeventer of Lansing; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Douglas (in 1973); four brothers, Frances, Winifred, Henry and David Vandeventer; and two sisters, Thelma Cihak and Dorothy Spencer. In lieu of flowers, Please consider a donation to Great lake Hospice, Thornapple Manor or a charity of your choice. The family will receive friends and family Friday, April 8 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa with funeral services Saturday, April 9 at 11 AM at Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa with Rev.
