Howard Lawrence "Jake" Sheaffer, age 101, of Muir, passed away Saturday, April 
12, 2014, at River Inn Adult Foster Care in Grand Ledge.  He was born Nov. 4, 
1912, in North Plains Township, Ionia County, the son of Lawrence E. and 
Marjorie M. "Margie" (Crandell) Sheaffer.  In May of 1947 he married Clara L. 
Bixby in Saranac, Mich. 

Jake was a lifelong farmer and breeder of pure-bred, registered Percheron 
horses.  He was a founding member of the Michigan Draft Horse Breeders 
Association and life member of Percheron Horse Association of Michigan.  He was 
a longtime member of the National Percheron Horse Association and served as 
their Director from 1969 until 1985.   He was inducted into the National 
Percheron Horse Breeders' Hall of Fame.  Jake truly enjoyed life and was 
passionate in his farming.   

Jake is survived by his son, Darrell (Elaine) Sheaffer; step-son, Don Skelding; 
grandchildren, Neil Sheaffer and Ingrid (Michael) Meilan; step-grandchildren, 
Deb, Cathy, Robert, Sue and Jim Skelding; a sister, Demarice "Mary" Marshall; 
and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Clara in 1966, and four 
brothers: Philip, Marvin, Maxwell and Veryl Sheaffer.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the Lyons-Muir 
Community Church on M-21 in Muir at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ken Harger 
officiating.  Interment will follow in North Plains Cemetery.  Visitation will 
be held on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home, 816 
E. Main St., Carson City.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be 
made to the Michigan Draft Horse Association Scholarship Fund, 6871 S. Ionia 
Road, Bellevue, MI 49021.
