B. Shannon The funeral obsequies of the late M. B. Shannon were under the charge of Ionia lodge No. 36, F. & A. Masons, of which body he had been a member since July 13, 1869. At the appointed time, the lodge marched to the residence, headed by the Ionia City band. After the regular short service at the house, the remains were borne to the hearse, while Plegel’s dirge was being rendered. The lines moved in open order to the Methodist church, the band playing appropriate music. At the church, the fraternity occupied the west side of the broad aisle; the relatives with members of Queen Esther chapter, the east side. After singing and prayer, Dr. Barnes gave a short discourse on the text from Job 14:14: “If a man die, shall hi live again?” “The question of a future state is one which has been asked by people, tribes, tongues and nations since man has had an existence. It is the Mason’s question as well as the Christian’s. It is the longing of the soul to know of the future. Few, very few, if any, believe in annihilation.” The closing hymn, “The Beautiful Land,” was the composition of a Templar’s wife. From the church, the lodge marched to Jefferson street, where carriages were in waiting. At Highland Park, the full masonic ritual was given. There were sixty-five of the fraternity in line, and twenty-five members of Queen Esther chapter. The bearers were: John W. Dye, D. Waterbury, Gregg Williams, H.A. Rich, A.A. Sunderlin, W.F. Soule. The casket was covered with floral pieces.
