Ionia Standard – Friday, 10 May 1889
Mrs. Sarah E., wife of Mark B. Shannon, departed this life on Monday, the 6th 
inst., after a short but very painful illness.  Mrs. Shannon was 35 years of 
age, born and reared in this county, and her death has left a place in her 
family and in a large circle of friends that will be severely felt and hard to 
fill.  It is said that death “loves a shining mark,” and in this instance its 
shafts were directed to one whose life was bright in all those qualities of 
heart and hand that endeared her to her family, her friends and her 
neighbors.  A devoted and faithful wife, a kind and loving mother to children 
not her own, a generous and obliging friend and Christian, she has gone to her 
reward, and left to her family and acquaintances the example of a self-
sacrificing and noble life.
