Belding Banner, 6 Jun 1901, page 4

Freeman Shaver of Portland, a man 84 years of age, was missed from home and was
found drowned hanging over the side of a boat in Grand river, just above the
town.  The supposition is that he had a fit and fell head downward into the
water and was unable to get back, although a gash was found in his forehead.  An
inquest was held and the verdict was accidental death.
